I just found out that our youth group pastor gave out a survey to the youth group last Wed. Pink for girls and blue for boys. It contained very personal questions about the youth group's sex lives. For example:
1. Are you having/had sex?
2. Are you "m" word (I'm too embarrassed to use the real word)
There were more questions, but I don't have a copy of the survey. My kids weren't there last week. My father who works at the church told me about it and he didn't like it. My kids feel this is crossing the line and so do I. Is this the norm for youth groups and how do you feel about it?
Permalink Reply by Susie on May 1, 2012 at 7:11pm I don't know if this is the norm for youth groups or not, but I sure hope not!
I think that it crosses the line. I would be upset if my kids were told to fill out a survey of that sort.
Permalink Reply by Amy Bliss on May 2, 2012 at 7:56am I think it crossed a line, only because it's so unorthodox and he should have made sure people knew what he was planning.
That being said, if it was anonymous and the youth group leader was trying to get honest information so he could talk to the group about things that they are actually going through..
What I'm trying to say is that you should get all of the info about his motives and what he plans/planned to do with the info.
When I was younger, I had a youth group leader who was open to talking about anything to our whole group. If we needed to ask, we could. Hopefully he had a positive motive even if he went about it in a not so smart way.

Unfortunately, there was no prior meeting with parents to go over what was going to be discussed or where we could have any input. They are getting their curriculum from http://www.xxxchurch.com/ and someone called Levi The Poet who does videos. We have also found out that other pastors in the area have major issues with the curriculum and posts they are seeing about the series on Facebook. The series is called "I'm Sexy and I know it". I'm shocked at some of the things they've been talking about in front of the younger middle schoolers. My daughter, a senior, and her two friends were shocked and they felt it crossed a line and they have now quit our youth group. There are many other issues with our youth group. I really appreciated your opinions! Thanks!
Permalink Reply by Michelle D. Garrett on May 6, 2012 at 10:29pm I, personally, wouldn't have had an issue with this as long as I was aware of the survey and questions ahead of time. If my children are going to have the sex talk (other than with me), I'd prefer for it to be in an environment such as a youth church group where they can freely express themselves and be mentored about what's expected of them as young adults and children of God. Unfortunately, kids are having sex and parents, adults, youth leaders, etc are not talking to them about it and being specific about what we expect of them or answering the questions they may have. If they get more information about why they should have sex from the world and not enough information about why they should not from parents, church, mentors then which option will they most likley choose?
