There are times when I just cannot think of the actual word of something and so I say things that make me sound 80 years old.
Like "Cash Machine". I couldn't think of ATM, so that's what I called it.
Skull Orchard from my grandpa for a cemetery. I love that one.
Skiff - as in a "skiff" of snow. Kind of like a dusting, only country style. Thank you, Grandma.
Jonquils - Daffodils, only in my Grandma's words.
What about you? I'm curious.

"Bee's knees" (from my Mum... who learned this when we moved to the States in the early 90's and fell in love with it...?)
I'm bringing them back, baby. Bringing them back.
Permalink Reply by Amy Bliss on August 9, 2012 at 8:07am I said Cool Beans when I was a kid and I LOVE the bee's knees! That's cute!

Permalink Reply by Tiffany Noth on August 1, 2012 at 12:27pm Does "winder sill" {window sill} count? Though I don't actually say it unless I'm teasing. I promise.
Permalink Reply by Tina B on August 1, 2012 at 6:55pm My Grandma is from Brooklyn and we tease her about how she says things.. like "toilet" is "terlet" and "oil" is "erl". She usually tries to hit us, but it's still funny.
Permalink Reply by Tina B on August 1, 2012 at 6:53pm I use the word "guff" a lot. I remember hearing it once a long time ago, then I heard it again on "A Goofy Movie". Example: I'm tired of getting guff from my in-laws because they raised an idiot.
I use "mind" as well. My Grandma uses it all the time. Example: Who wants to mind my child while I have a spa day?
My Mother had a few phrases I picked up on as a child. "Okey doke" was my fave. She used the word "wooby" which is something that brings you comfort. It's now my dog's nickname.
When my Dad gets mad and feels the need to leave a note somewhere, it's always hilariously misspelled. Example: "Please make sure to cloze the deep frezzer or food will defroste." We use 'frezzer' to this day, but not to Dad's face of course :)
Permalink Reply by Zillah Renee on August 4, 2012 at 10:37pm I use phrases like "Cool Beans" from my mom.
In my family we mostly used to (and still do) make up words and use them in place of real ones.
"Oober" is one of my favorite ones. We use this in place of very. "I am oober excited to go!"
"Humdingerchicken." This is one of my moms. She uses it when things don't go the way she wants them to, or anything goes wrong.
