How did you break into the freelancing world? Is it steady and how can I get in?

I had it easy because I had contacts who called me and I just took the plunge.  I don't think it is as steady as full time but then again a full time job isn't a guarantee either!  What is your background?  Are there people you used to work with that you can call?  There are also online freelance directories.  As a blogger you probably have marketable skills.  Some blogs pay for post!
