Writer Workshop Weekly Prompt & Link up (February 13, 2012)

I'm seeing some incredibly fine writing and I couldn't be happier. Well I could be if those of you who just read would actually bite the bullet and participate. I won't bite I promise.

And just to help you along, there's a new prompt issued EVERY MONDAY that you can join in on.

Whether you choose fiction, memoir, blogging, non-fiction, or creative non-fiction, the prompt is for you to write whatever you are inspired to write. That's the purpose of the prompt. I am always open to prompt suggestions, so feel free to send them to me!!

Let's get the ball rolling here. You will have until 11:59 pm EST on Saturday to write to the prompt and link up your work. A new prompt and a new linkup will go up the following Monday.

This week your challenge is:

In celebration of Valentine's Day, write a love story, no more than 1,500 words, using this picture as inspiration (image source here):

Don't forget to display the BMWW badge in the post somewhere and link up with the url to the POST not your BLOG. Leave a comment after you post letting us know it's there. Try to read the others who link up, as many as you can, and leave a comment or critique.

Sigh... I am over 1500 words again, by 224 words to be exact. Is it ok if I put it up anyway? I'd appreciate help with the editing to cut it down.

Imelda, I'm right there with ya. Sometimes it's hard to shave off part of your story, especially if it feels right to you. What I usually do is go back through, look for parts that might be redundant to the plot or use stronger descriptive words vs a longer sentence or two. Hope this helps.

Thanks Chelle. I will try to do that. :-) I am having a hard time with being objective though. I labored for those words, now I am cutting them. :-)) Yay! I am being silly.

This is a totally normal thing for writers too. We all hate cutting words. This is why I assign these prompts and issue word counts though. I want you to learn to make the most of the word count. Tighten up your sentences, let your reader fill in some blanks, etc It's a hard lesson to learn.

One of the best resourcces I have found is the 100 Word Song offered by Lance at http://lancemyblogcanbeatupyourblog.wordpress.com Using a 100 words to tell your story is a tough task! You really learn how to manipulate the Engish language and make the words count.

I don't know how you do it but it's probably something I need to challenge myself with to keep growing. Any deadlines?? We know how I am with deadlines. Lol

Yes. The new song goes up at 7pm EST every Tuesday, so you technically have until 6:59 pm to get it linked up.

You could also try the Trifecta Writing Challenge. They offer the 3rd word for your inspiration, and you must stay between 33 and 333 words. They are doing new prompts on the weekends now too that can be pretty tough. It's good exercise. This weekend, you are to rewrite a story previously published in 33 words (you read that right), titling the story the same as the one you are rewriting. Talk about tough!

One day, I might take up more challenges. I am still much afraid. This workshop is already a major thing for me right now and I am learning a lot from it. Perhaps, when I have done more writing, I'd have the courage to participate in these challenges. :-)
