Why?

If you become a parent be prepared to answer one question hundreds, if not thousands, of times. Why? Most of the time you will have an answer. You will make one up for the other questions. Today I am the one asking, “Why?” My friend’s 16-month-old daughter passed away this morning. Her name was Grace. She was born with a condition called CDH or Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. She defied the odds and celebrated her first birthday. It was truly amazing. Then, she suffered a setback which…See More

When I was your age.....

Nine years ago today Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook. Can you imagine living your life day to day not knowing what acquaintances are having for breakfast? What would you do without status updates from that kid who sat next to you in your 8th grade Science class? My younger children will never know life before social networking sites. They will never know what it’s like to stalk an ex-boyfriend/girlfriend in person. You know you drove by your ex’s house to see if they were home. Now, a few…See More

First Day of School

“Why do you keep kissing me?” my 5-year-old giggled before he left for school this morning. I had a pit in my stomach and wanted him to stay home. I couldn’t tell him. He doesn’t know about the children in Connecticut. My son still thinks school is a safe, fun place and that is how it should be. We cannot live in fear. We can grieve for the innocent children and adults murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School. I think about those babies every time I look at mine. Of course, we can and should…See More

Letting Go

I woke up at 4 a.m. from a sound sleep, jumped up and ran to the bathroom to get a bucket. I think I pulled a muscle. How did I know my 5-year-old was about to puke? I have no idea. Of course, I got to his bedroom two seconds too late. In hindsight, letting him eat a chocolate cupcake before bed wasn’t the best decision made as a parent. While I waited for him to fall back to sleep I logged on to a local website. The headline was tragic. A 17-year-old from my town had been killed in a car…See More

Enough

I am sick of hearing people praise Jovan Belcher. I keep hearing stories about how he overcame obstacles to become an NFL player. Friends and family called the Kansas City Chief's linebacker a "nice guy" and a "beautiful person." On Saturday this well respected man shot and killed his girlfriend Kassandra Perkins before taking his own life. She was just 22-years-old. Belcher thanked the general manager and coach of the Kansas City Chiefs before putting a gun to his head at Arrowhead Stadium.…See More

Wish LIst

Gwyneth Paltrow published her Christmas wish list.  Phew!  I have been to a million stores trying to find her the perfect gift. This will make shopping much easier.  Included in her list is a quilted Yoga shirt with one strap.  Gwyneth was frustrated that she couldn’t find a single strap Yoga shirt so she teamed up with Beyond Yoga to make one.  I wish the only thing I had to worry about was whether or not my left shoulder was exposed during a downward facing dog.  Girl has a lot of time on her…See More

Thanks for the friend request. I just read your Letting Go post. The feelings you conjure are so touching, so familiar. I really like your writing. Funny how a little perspective makes us profoundly grateful for our kids, even while they're puking on our shoes.

Happy holidays,

Lisa
