When is enough, enough?

Have you read it? Erica Jong's controversial article in The Wall Street Journal went viral this week. I have seen a number of very eloquent blog posts in response to Ms. Jong. I am not going to attempt to point/counterpoint the WSJ article here. I just want to ask one question: When is enough, enough?Much has been made of the so-called “Mommy Wars” over the years. It can actually be traced all the way…See More

One love

I was intrigued recently - and a little relieved - when psychologist and child expert Dr. Michelle Borba, whom I follow on Twitter, shared some interesting new information about raising only children. Having become a mom at the age of 40, my husband and I knew we would only have one child.…See More

A simple moment

A great deal of the time these days, life seems chaotic. I get caught up in my many responsibilities. Care for toddler (and that entails about 101 separate duties). Cook. Clean. Do laundry. Buy food. Buy clothes. Feed the animals. Feed the humans. And so on, and so on...In many ways it all feels so mundane. Often it is stressful. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I rarely take the opportunity to step back and be grateful for what I have. But then there are moments like yesterday, when I am…See More

The UGLY Truth

One of my favorite bloggers is Debi at The Truth About Motherhood. All last month she ran a "Be a Better Parent" challenge. It was all kinds of awesome! This month, her challenge is "Be a Better You!" The Day 1 Challenge was "Banish the yoga pants and ponytails." Her post literally had me…See More

The other night, after our daughter had gone to bed, my husband stood in the kitchen, let out a huge sigh and exclaimed, "I am exhausted!" Assuming he had been up until the wee hours of the morning (which does often happen) I asked, "What time did you come to bed last night?"Exasperated, he responded, "That's not it! I'm swamped at work right now!" I nodded intently, displaying what I thought was understanding and sympathy. Silence, then, "You obviously don't remember what it's like," he…See More

Ready or not?

So, DD has started to bring my husband or me a fresh diaper and the package of wipes when she needs to be changed. She even signs, "Please." It's cute and very convenient. It also makes us wonder if she is ready to start potty training. She is only 19 months old. And she does not seem to be aware when she needs to go potty. She also is primarily non verbal, so I don't know how she would tell us if she did need to go. Isn't that a key prerequisite? We bought her a talking Elmo potty some time ago.…See More

Elizabeth Flora Ross commented on Bridget Morgan's blog post Stay at Home Mom vs. Work outside/inside the home Mom
"This is actually the subject of the book I am currently writing! I interviewed 54 women about the decisions they made, if they had a choice, and how they feel about their situations if they don't have a choice. It is a complex and interesting…"

Cabin Fever

Remember the good 'ole days? When your mom would yell at you to go play outside? Me, too. I wish I could do the same with my daughter. She's too young, of course, to go outside unsupervised. So I just wish WE could go outside. But with temperatures in the upper 90s and heat indices in the 100s, it just isn't happening right now.My daughter doesn't seem to realize she was born in The South, and will likely spend all her formative years here. After five minutes of being out in the Florida heat,…See More

When Mommy doesn't have super powers

I really hate when my child is sick. Sure, there are the selfish reasons; I don't get any sleep and I have to deal with a crabby child. But there are far bigger reasons I find it so difficult:I CAN'T FIX IT. As a mom, we hate to see our kids unhappy. And when that happens, we want to be able to fix it. Usually, when they're sick, there is little or nothing we can do. There may or may not be medicine that can help with symptoms or shorten the duration. But most of the time, you just have to…See More

A good day

This is a very special day for me. I love this day. First of all, my daughter is 18 months old. Some days that feels like a long time, other days it seems like the blink of an eye. But in the scheme of things, it is a short period of time. Rather miraculous then that in that span she has gone from this tiny, helpless newborn:To this fun, fiercely independent toddler:…See More

Joy and Pain

Note: I had this post written and scheduled for today when I came across an announcement from Theta Mom about her blogoversary contest. So I decided this post would be my official entry. I am a proud Theta Mom and I support The Mission! There were a lot of things about motherhood I did not anticipate. One element that continues to take me by surprise is the way I am affected by the pain and…See More

TGI... What day is it anyway?

One thing I have noticed since I bid farewell to the working world is that the days are basically all the same. Monday does not get me down. Nor does Friday generate the excitement it once did. For the most part, one day is just like the last. And the next... When my daughter was a newborn and I was in a constant state of severe sleep deprivation, my husband liked to tease me by asking, "What day is it today?" For the record, I always knew. Both of the week and of the month. I may have put the…See More

Let's hear it for date night!

I was not exaggerating when I estimated I have been away from my daughter no more than a combined 72 hours in the first year and a half of her life. Which is why when we found out the rate on both our mortgages was being cut dramatically, and we would have extra money in the bank each month, the first words out of my mouth were, "We're getting a babysitter!" We are going to establish a monthly date night. Or at least…See More

It was the best of times...

It was the worst of times. At the moment, we are experiencing a little bit of both in our home. Our daughter is close to 18 months old, and has been doing her best Dr. Jekyll and Miss Hyde impersonation lately. One minute she is a sweet, adorable, happy child. The next, she has the ability to become, well, a monster! She can throw some serious tantrums. We have tried a number of different approaches to dealing with them, with varied results. A great deal of the time, her meltdowns are caused by…See More

I'm a wife and full-time mom to a toddler. Recently rediscovered my passion for writing and have jumped in head first. School Days

Posted on September 20, 2010 at 9:24pm 0 Comments

Today I will be enrolling my daughter in a two day a week preschool program. Never in a million years did I think I would even be considering such a thing at this point. She's not yet two years old. But she is so ready. She's been ready for a while; I have just needed some time to wrap my head around it.…

Simple Pleasures

Posted on September 20, 2010 at 9:23pm 0 Comments

It has often been said we can learn a lot from a child. Especially when it comes to taking pleasure in the simple things. Like a sheet thrown over a table. This week, my daughter discovered the joy of the homemade fort. It seems her obsession with getting on top of the kitchen table has been replaced with an overwhelming desire to hide under it. Which…
