Crepes, Hot Chocolate and The Irresistible Table

I love cookbooks.  I love big ones, small ones, old and new ones.  And before this starts to sound like a Dr. Seuss book, I’ll add I have all of the above. The oldest one I own is my mother’s cookbook from the 1950’s.  I can’t bear to part with it, but honestly I’ve never cooked a thing from it. I’m not a complicated-use-a-million-ingredients kind of cook.  I’m a simple-throw-it-all-together-make-it-easy-as-possible kind of cook. I don’t often measure, unless I’m baking. In my kitchen my motto…See More

Thanksgiving Reinvented

It was Thanksgiving Day, 1993. My youngest son was at the “Ice Bowl”, the fond term for the year the Dallas Cowboys played in record snow and ice. I stood next to my dad’s bed, with what was left of his frail body. He was too weak to have a voice, and in within a few hours of the day he left this world. It was one of the hardest days of my life.Of all the things about the cold, icy day in November 1993 I remember my dad wanted us to spend Thanksgiving with his family one last time. For reasons…See More

Dime Store Diva

I stepped in to the store, taking stock of the room as I walked through the glass doors. I wasn’t sure where to start. My eyes scanned the displays and my heart skipped a beat as I saw the aisles of tops and dresses in a rainbow of colors. I carefully picked through several racks before I found a top I thought was perfect for the occasion. It was date night and it would be the first time I would wear a new outfit in a very long time. Not because I didn’t want new clothing, but because I didn’t…See More

If You Can’t Say Something Nice – What Not To Say To Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

According to the 2010 Census, almost 5 million children live in a grandparent headed household. Most of these are either the grandparent raising the grandchild alone or the child’s family moved back in with the parents. There are numerous reasons this could happen, and it’s likely you know someone in this situation. In our case, we’ve found we have a lot of well meaning friends and more often than not acquaintances who feel led to speak their mind when finding out our situation. Having…See More

To Tell the Truth - IRS Bounty Program

My husband had reason to deal with an individual we don't know recently. He seemed like a nice enough guy. We were selling something and he was buying. They talked for a while and he began to share a little more than my husband expected. He has a very successful business making 6 figures yearly and enjoying this extra income on top of his retirement. He was a colorful, outgoing gentleman.Until he spoke the words we wish we'd never heard. "Taxes? What are those? This is a cash business, I don't…See More

The Adventures of a WAHN (Work at Home Nana) | How I Decide on a Craft Show Venue

We turned in the parking lot slowing to pay the $5 parking fee. The man at the gate took our $20 bill and asked if we had anything smaller, calling my husband Big Spender. This made me giggle a little as he handed back two $10 bills in exchange. As we drove away we realized he just gave us back the $20 we paid. He didn’t have change, so played it off without questions for the next guy. We parked, having no idea where we were headed, picked up the plastic tote full of my shirts and onesies and…See More

Oh What a Beautiful Morning

I love the quiet of the morning. It’s going to be a busy day and I enjoy the moments just before the grandchildren run downstairs looking for breakfast and Nana lovin. It’s our morning ritual as they crawl up in my lap and start their day with hugs and cuddle time from Nana. The moments before this are the sweet, quiet minutes with only the birds outside and the click of my fingers on the keyboard. I’m thankful for mornings. I spent the weekend at a writer’s conference unexpectedly. It was an…See More
