Homeschooling Week 4: We're Finally Done with Weather!!!!

...Some of our extra-curricular activities started this week.  History Kid and Tiny Dancer both joined a new FIRST Lego League team a homeschool friend of ours started.  Gymnastics started back up for History Kid too.  After a summer off, he was very happy to get back.  For fun, we had a Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs party to celebrate the end of our horribly boring weather unit.  We watched the movie and ate meatball subs.  We also used the opportunity to make and eat a giant cookie for…See More

Homeschool Week 3: More Weather and Artist's/Writer's Workshop

The kids made further progress in spelling, math, grammar, and handwriting.  They've completed more lessons in those subjects than I anticipated they would at this point.  For the third week in a row, I haven't heard any complaints about math from History Kid.  Tiny Dancer is flying through her math lessons and still enjoying Teaching Textbooks.  They also finished reading Sherlock Holmes for history/literature. In History we finished studying Africa, 1850-1900.  The kids wrote mock journal…See More

Combining Meet the Masters Art Program with Picturing Writing: Van Gogh

Although the Picturing Writing process is geared towards classroom teachers, I'm adapting it to our homeschool.  It's working beautifully so far.  We did a mini-lesson earlier this week from Beth Olshansky's book, The Power of Pictures: Creating…See More

How to Marbelize Paper

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 9:46am 0 Comments

I scoured the internet for marbelizing tutorials and they're all a little different.  I took the parts that made the most sense, went through a bit of trial and error, and came up with the following process.

To learn how, please follow the link:…

Homeschooling Week 21: This is What 5 Days Feels Like

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 9:42am 0 Comments

We couldn't go to co-op this week because we had eye appointments during that time.  Because the eye doctor is about 5 minutes from our house, we were able to get in almost a full day of school, and what a difference it made not trying to cram 5 days worth of material into 4 days!  We had an hour or more of free time at the end of each school day before we had to head off to activities, and our "long days" (the one or two days each week we don't have activities and do school longer) were…

Effort: A Life Lesson

Posted on October 14, 2012 at 5:05pm 0 Comments

Few things are more frustrating for a parent than dealing with a whiny, frustrated, agitated, inconsolable child.  When you can take that situation, and turn it into something positive, your child might learn a lesson that will stay with them forever.

Maybe.

Hopefully.

A couple weeks ago we painted pictures of autumn for Artist's/Writer's workshop.  A big part of the method is modeling, so I created a crayon-resist watercolor of  autumn while the kids…

Picturing Writing: Autumn Poems & Pictures

Posted on October 14, 2012 at 5:02pm 0 Comments

The kids created crayon-resist watercolor paintings and poems about Autumn.  We read a book about Autumn prior to creating the pictures, and several poems about Autumn before the writing portion of Artist's/Writer's Workshop.  While we read poems by other authors, we highlighted words and phrases that spoke to us, then we brainstormed words and phrases of our own that matched our pictures.  We mixed things up a bit this time. Normally we brainstorm words together for my picture, and then…
