Winter Storm: Blessing in Disguise

This winter, one of the many winter storms that passed through Pennsylvania hit us very hard.  There were hundreds of thousands of people without power.  I was one of those people.  I woke up Wednesday morning to a very silent, dark, and cold house.  I just wanted to crawl back into bed, but I knew I had little ones that had…See More

The Healthiest Apple Muffin Ever!

It is apple picking time! Well, we now have a whole lot of apples to get rid off.  The first thing I did was make the girls some apple muffins.  This is a very healthy, low-fat, low calorie recipe.  I am not a calorie counter nor am I afraid of healthy fats in my food.  However, if for some reason you do need to watch your sugar intake or your consumption of fats, this recipe may work for you.A few key things to note: This is a low-sugar recipe.  That means, I did not use a lot of sugar; it…See More

Introducing Kids to High Risk Foods

I decided to write this post after making a comment on Facebook and realizing few parents are aware of the new guidelines for introducing high risk foods to babies.  After doing some research, I also realized some pediatricians are not aware of the new guidelines either!  With all the allergies nowadays, it is scary giving your kid peanut products for the first time, so at the very least, we want to know what the experts are saying.  I put together a summary of what I found and if you want to…See More

Why the "Perfect Lawn" Can be Detrimental to Your Family's Health

So now is the time that we all start preparing our gardens and lawns for the spring. We all want to keep those lawns looking nice and green and keep those pesky bugs out of our rose bushes. It is no surprise then that I received a newsletter from a our local nursery making a few suggestions. Now is the time it says to "make your first application of granular pre-emergent weed control" fertilizer to the lawn. It also suggests that you consider adding a "liquid or granular insecticide which is…See More

Kids, Food, and Fat.

With child obesity becoming such a growing problem, it is no wonder that there is a current push to teach children about food.  I think teaching kids how to eat healthier is all well and good.  However, I have also heard well-intentioned parents make the association between food and "fatness" to their children.  My personal belief is that that is harmful and unnecessary.I was the "fat" kid growing up.  I still remember that someone had nicknamed me Miss Piggy.  I had very little self-esteem and…See More

How to Reduce Healthcare Costs: Part 1

Someone told me recently, "You are only one illness away from being broke."  There is so much truth to that statement.  Healthcare in this country is very expensive.  In fact, we spend more on healthcare than any other country in the world.  It is no wonder why many Americans are concerned about rising premiums and health care…See More

Luisa Rodriguez replied to Allie Rambles's discussion What do your kids eat for breakfast?
"I vary it.  Sometimes she has cereal, but other times she will have yogurt with granola or a piece of toast with fresh fruit.  If I have the time, I will make eggs. I leave the pancakes for weekends only when we have a lazy morning. "

Your Health: Why Soil Matters

Few people understand the importance of soil.  In today’s American culture, most people get their food from a grocery store.  Therefore society has lost an appreciation for what is involved in growing fruits, vegetables, and grains.  This lack of knowledge on how things are grown is the primary reason why the average Joe does not understand what it means to grow food organically.  And they certainly do not understand the role of soil in growing the food that they consume.  When you watch a…See More

Teaching our Kids to Communicate with Us

I think as parents sometimes we hesitate to discuss certain topics with our children because it is uncomfortable for us.  However, kids sometimes find themselves in very difficult situations and do not seek help because they are either afraid to communicate with their parents or they do not know that they should.  I want to share a couple of personal examples of why it is important to actively engage our children so that they become comfortable in talking to us. I was a victim of sexual…See More
