Parenting ruined my brilliant brain!

I don't know what else to blame because I can no longer rely on my brain for everything! Now, I was not brilliant in the astrophysicist kind of way before I became a parent, but I could count on it to get through life without goof-ups. Sadly, that is no longer the case. In the beginning, I had scientific reasons for my predicament - there's the pregnancy brain and baby brain. You know, first the pregnancy hormones mess you up and then the new baby kind of turns you into a zombie. But nobody…See More

This mom has separation anxiety!

For many parents, separation anxiety is a big concern - you know, the behaviour which involves the child clinging on to you and refusing to let go? Okay, maybe that's dramatizing it, but that's exactly what it feels like when you are trying to take a shower or eat dinner. Little Dude has spent most of his time with me, and I am what you can call an advocate of natural/attachment parenting, so he definitely has separation anxiety. I'm just waiting for him to grow out of it, simply because I'm…See More

Where are my shopping soirees?

Back when we were single and unencumbered (you know what I mean, right?), we so looked forward to what we endearingly called our shopping soirees or retail therapy or window shopping (wow, I almost forgot that term)! Back then, shopping was for fun. I was a lone shopper and didn't really need company to go shopping for hours on end. There was enough time to leisurely try on as much as I wanted...you know where this is going right? At first, I didn't even …See More

The curse of the mom-guilt

It's hard enough being a parent than having to deal with all the guilt that comes attached with it. Why is it that I automatically feel guilty about anything I do only for myself since I became a mother? The degrees may vary, but every parent feels it. Especially those who cannot spend enough time with their kids due to work or other factors. But even the littlest things can trigger guilt in me. I stay at home and am there with Little Dude all day, but that doesn't stop me from constantly…See More

How well do you know your kids?

The other day, my mom made an offhand remark to someone that I never liked babies as a kid. This was a bit appalling for me because, as far as I can remember, I have always adored babies. I have no idea why mom thought something about me that just wasn't true. It also made me think about how we may be misinterpreting our children's actions. Would I end up making a mistake like this? I hope not. It's very easy to generalize children's behaviour and assume our kids are thinking a certain way…See More

How I became 'that' kind of parent (and not 'that' one!)

It's very easy to attach labels to different parenting 'styles' - crunchy mom, hockey mom, green mom, tiger mom and so on... These terms are used casually, especially in online conversations, but do we ever stop to think whether those parents intended to be labelled so in the first place? (I've written about the social pressures of parenting earlier.) Nobody really starts off thinking, "I'm going…See More
