Overcoming the trauma of starting preschool

Little Einstein

“Look at your little Einstein over there,” my friend smiled, nodding over in the direction of my son who was playing in the sand box outside her house. I looked at over at Lance and smiled indulgently. “He sure is,” I replied, pleasantly pleased and surprised that my friend had noticed that my son was a genius, let alone commented on it. Of course, Cliff and I had noticed that our son was a genius. A long time ago. It wasn't hard: there had been all kinds of clues. His advanced…See More

Spot the Canadians in Yorkshire

As a Brit living in Vancouver I have a never ending list of just how different Canadians are from Brits, and how I will never really fit in here because, well, quite simply because I'm just too different. But it never occurred to me just how strange my kids and husband might find my fellow countrymen until we arrived in Britain and they started noticing and commenting on things that I, as a British person, wouldn't have thought twice about but had the rest of my family in fits of laughter.…See More

Losing my Yorkshire-isms

One of the interesting nuances of the Yorkshire dialect is the way that we put ‘our’ in front of the names of family members whenever we refer to them. For example, whenever I talk about my big-big brother, Matt, I always refer to him as ‘our Matt’, although of course when said out loud in a Yorkshire accent ‘our’ is pronounced as ‘R’ so ‘our Matt’ sounds like ‘R Matt’, and my big brother Karl, is ‘R Karl’. Parents also refer to their child as ‘our so-and-so’, so in my dad’s eyes I will always…See More

Uncovering the myth about men and their BBQs

The kids broke up from school last Thursday. On Friday the heat wave started. And on Saturday my husband left me for two weeks while he went to teach in Cape Cod. Something I am not bitter about. At all.And while it’s one thing being left as the sole care giver for four young kids during the first two weeks of the summer holidays, it’s another discovering that your husband has left in the height of BBQ season without finding it in his heart to pass on his substantial BBQ…See More

A day out with Grandad

It’s the smell that always hits me first, assaulting my nose before I’m even halfway through the door. Even though I know it’s going to happen, even though I am aware that I have tensed up, bracing myself for the inevitable invasion upon my nostrils, the smell still always catches me by surprise. And not a good surprise either. The unmistakable whiff of pee. The overwhelming fetor of a heavily disinfected room. The waft of something bubbling away in the kitchen, a stew, cabbage, minced meat.…See More

The obligatory graveside photo

A few years back (which probably means closer to twenty years ago), I was over at someone’s house, an aunt or uncle maybe, definitely an older relative. We were just hanging out, chatting, catching up, when they pulled out a photo album.Nothing odd about that, you might think, and I agree. What was odd was that the photo my aunt was so desperate to share with me was a snapshot of a gravestone, another recently deceased relative’s gravestone, around which were huddled a collection of family…See More

Dance mum dilemma: the injured dancer

Your daughter’s end of year dance recital starts in two hours. It should be a time for celebration, the grand finale after a year of hard work and competition. Instead, you have a giant problem on your hands. Your daughter is hobbling around, barely able to walk, let alone dance. It seems that her knee, the one she injured on the trampoline four days earlier, is still bothering her. The question is, what do you, as the parent, do? Do you let your child dance, and risk potentially injuring…See More

Knees and cupcakes

Cliff is away.Again.He left half way through a long weekend. Naturally I wasn’t impressed. There’s nothing quite like being left alone on a Bank Holiday Monday with four kids. Bank Holidays are supposed to be my chance to get a break from being non-stop provider of kid care. Instead my workload was doubled or quadrupled or something.Cliff claims that this conference is the best one he’s been to all year. He means work wise, of course. Not wanting to sound cynical or anything but he’s in…See More

Size of a cow

Last night, Cliff and I went on a date. We were supposed to be going to see the new Star Trek movie, but since the movie times available to us were either 6.40 pm (too early; we didn’t want to traumatize our friend who had offered to babysit for us by asking her to put four kids (especially the two youngest ones who don’t always do as they’re told) to bed) or 10 pm (too late; we are normally heading for bed this time of night not the movie theatre) we decided to give Star Trek a miss (until…See More
