I'm Dying to Hear What You Have to Say

Many of my students are without communication.
They are nonverbal.

We have tried the recommended methods that are out there.

Why I Will Walk on October 22

I know many people have mixed feelings about Autism Speaks. Some think of the organization as a godsend, others... especially adults with autism, feel they don't need an organization to supposedly SPEAK for them.
Here is my take on it...
I am one of…

She Needed Help, Someone Had to..

I was coming up blank for a post tonight so I went over to one of my new favorite sites Mama Kat's writing workshop to find a fun writing prompt. I cycled through about eight different topics when I came upon:Describe a time you spoke up for someone who couldn't speak up for themselves, and I instantly knew what I was going to write, so we begin.…

A Box Full of Wishes

No one ever said that life would be easy; and life on the Spectrum can be downright hard. Hopes are often dashed, dreams are abandoned, wishes made with increasing skepticism and decreasing frequency.

And yet… life is also filled with magical moments that have a tendency to sneak up on you when you least expect them...

The (Calendar) Struck Thirteen

If you're reading my blog you already know that April is Autism Awareness Month. Coincidentally, its the month we celebrate our son's birthday. This April I find myself particularly "aware" of his autism because he's turned thirteen. THIRTEEN. He's a teenager! Or as he puts it, "Now I'm big, big, BIG!" How did this happen?

He began the day in a manner which is most atypical for a teenager; he climbed into bed with his parents and was turned into a sandwich. (He was the bologna, we… Continue

I Want To be a Spokesperson For Autism Acceptance and Education

I truly believe that if we educate our children and loved ones about Autism, it would open their eyes to a whole new Beautiful World. People with Autism ARE Intelligent, Funny, Loving, Beautiful and so much more. Please take the time to Educate yourself and your children about Autism. It Effects so many people, it's time we learned to accept and embrace people for who they are and what they may become. Here is a link to an article that tells you ways to explain Autism to your child.… Continue

Why Not Medication?

Visit The Adventures of JAMC

My oldest, Mason, has the hardest time with controlling his behavior.  He's impulsive, bossy, and gets overstimulated way too easily.  He's learning and improving all the time, which we are so proud of, but he has setbacks, of course, which make school really hard.  Inevitably I will get asked, by a new teacher, the new principal, etc..:  Why is Mason not on some type of…

Ignorance and self control

I was in Walmart about a year ago with all four of my children. We had finished our shopping and were now waiting at checkout. My youngest was having a really hard time and was stimming, this is a repetitive behavior that he does to calm himself down.… Continue

What I Learned from Autism Shout Out and Money for Mason

This week I did things I don't ordinarily do. I supported two different

causes that have absolutely nothing to do with me. Well, at this

point, nothing. The bottom line is, I became involved.

When I supported Deb's Heart Walk, I did it for my dad.

My dad was just an exceptional man, and I heard his voice when I first

saw Deb's tweet about her Heart Walk, and I was moved to… Continue

Autism Shout Out Day

Today is Communication Shutdown, a global fundraiser for Autism.

The supporters of Communication Shutdown are separating themselves from

all forms of social media communication, emulating the communication

difficulties of many children with Autism.

While I can agree with the need to raise Autism awareness, and

particularly the need for services for Autistic adults, what if? What

if today is the day a young… Continue

He might be autistic...?

A few years ago, Hubby and I noticed that our middle son had some

ongoing issues. At first, it was humorous to find him wandering through

the house, shutting some doors, keeping others open; some light

switches left on, while others were turned off. He eventually grew out

of that phase and Hubby and I moved on. Then, when he started preschool

in preparation for kindergarten, we started noticing some social

issues. These issues didn't necessarily go away and Hubby… Continue
