We had a few stressful hours today...
Yesterday we had our tea party with Daddy then decided to head to the zoo. While we were there, L told me she had a sore in her mouth that really hurt. I could see it. It looked like she bit the inside of her cheek (and I know that hurts). She wasn't herself and even told me she didn't feel good. I asked what was bothering her she said her tummy and her cheek. She took a bit of a nap in the stroller (and the car once we left). We did a little bit of shopping (she seemed fine) every now and…

Birthdays with two so close in age
M's second birthday was in December. She seemed to really understand what was going on. She knew we were going to Chuck E. Cheese for her party (and she was so excited), she knew she was going to get presents, family was coming because it was HER DAY! She loved looking the different cakes and picking out which one that SHE wanted. This WAS HER DAY COMING UP, AND SHE KNEW IT!
L on the other hand (although she is older), it had been ten months since her birthday, so…

I nursed both of my boys for a year each. Now I have weaned my sweet Baby B and its a little bittersweet.
At around 10 months of age, I decided to slowly over the two month span work toward using a bottle regularly. I thought it was because of B's extreme love of nursing and cuddling, that was the reason I couldn't sleep at night anymore. Some people sleep really well with their little ones and co-sleeping is a magical bonding time. For me it meant lying awake the whole night counting…

Do you think it is rude to send a thank you note via email or text?
Now that my birthday is over, I have a few thank you notes to write and I am contemplating how to get them done. I grew up super old school, where a written thank you note was to be sent within 2 days of receiving any gift. I tried to teach my…

Princess Abuse in the Name of Birthday Fun
“Look– a Flynn Rider piñata! That would be perfect for your Rapunzel birthday party!” Yes, Lira and I are pouring over the internet, discussing the logistics of her December birthday. Don’t all moms start planning 4 months in advance?
“Do you think you could find a Rapunzel piñata instead?” Lira asked.
“You and your friends don’t want to line up and smack Rapunzel in the head, do you?” (For some reason,…

Great Birthday Party Websites for Kids
Is your least favorite part of your son’s birthday party putting together the favors? Does a themed birthday party make you twitch with anxiety? If you think Martha Stewart must be some sort of genius, check out these websites for inspiration.
Young Children
Some parents have it easy. When your child loves Dora the Explorer or dinosaurs, birthday party problems solve themselves. But when your youngest seems to love everything equally, where can you find…

Hoochie Mama?
It's hard to believe that I'll be 35 tomorrow. When I was a kid—and even in my early twenties—35 sounded ridiculously "grown up," and 40 seemed positively ancient. Yet here I am, feeling perfectly fine about the milestone.
I probably wouldn't be making much of…

If Cassius Marcellus Coolidge Was Around Today
In the early 1980s, I went on a week-long Florida theme park tour with my father. I was around eight years old. It was my first big trip away from home, and exciting (to say the least). One of the now-defunct theme parks we stopped at was Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus’ aptly titled “Circus World”. It was a circus-themed park with many different attractions. At the time, it was the Winter quarters for the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus, and that alone…

Muppet Birthday Party
While planning Gray's second birthday party, I was trying to remember Nora's, but all my memories seemed vague. Finally, I remembered why. I had bronchitis. I was exhausted and coughing up green goo that looked like the stuff they used to pour on people's heads on Nickelodeon when I was a kid. I remember her theme was Fraggles, but that's about all I could muster from my hacking haze.
I gave Gray the choice between cars (not the movie Cars, but the vehicles…

Going on 13
...When people told me to enjoy the moments of her childhood because they grow up too fast, I rolled my eyes. As I first struggled as a single mother, then with her diagnosis of her reactive attachment disorder, there were many times her childhood couldn’t end fast enough.
