Preventing or Decreasing Long-term Problems in Children

Parents/primary caregivers are the most important advocate for their children in all areas of their development, including social-emotional.  May is Mental Health Awareness month.     Children as young as newborns can have social-emotional issues.  Research shows, behavior problems that surface in early childhood are the single best predictor for several long-term outcomes, such as adolescent delinquency, gang involvement, incarceration, substance abuse, divorce, unemployment (Center for…

Dad’s Guide to Survive Active Labor

Many new dads don’t know what to expect during the labor and delivery process, especially, if they are a first time dad.  If you have ever seen a tv show or movie that shows a woman giving birth, let me assure you that most labors don’t look anything like what you have seen on television.  A woman typically labors for many hours before she is ready to deliver her baby and it…

A Dad’s Guide to Recognizing Early Labor

Dad are you prepared for the birth of your new baby?  If not, now is a great time to begin preparing for delivery day.  It is important to be  prepared so that you know exactly what to do when your wife or significant appears to be in labor.  The best way to learn about labor is to attend a child birthing class with your wife or significant other; however, child birth classes…

Dad’s Guide to Packing Hospital Bag for the Birth of Your Baby

Dad if you plan on staying at the hospital after your baby is born, you will need to pack a bag for your stay so that you don’t have to run back and forth from the hospital.  Of course, if you forget anything you have the luxury of going back home and grabbing items that you forgot (including items that your wife or significant other might have forgotten).  The laboring…

Keeping Dad Involved During Pregnancy – My Experience

I remember the morning that I took the pregnancy test on September 26, 2010, just a few days after my husband’s birthday.  The pregnancy test turned positive right away.  We had been trying for a long time to have a baby and we were finally blessed with the news that we were expecting.  At the time, the timing didn’t seem perfect but things always have a way of working out.…

Hearing Jack quote Mummy

Ollie thought he was being cute when he chucked my mobile phone at my head the other night; and goddamn, did it hurt! That sweet spot just above my eyebrow induced a few tears almost immediately.

Next thing I know is Jack had walked up to me, started stroking my hair and said ‘It’s alright Mummy. You’re not bleeding. Just give it a rub and it’ll feel better.’

There’s a lot of other words or phrases that he could have used, which I might’ve said, but he chose the right… Continue

Why are toddlers so messy?

It seriously does my head in when you think everything is peachy-keen with the boys, only to discover they are trying to destroy the house, with as much smelly, powdery, creamy stuff as possible.

Ok, I’m lucky to not have experienced poo all over the walls, but I have had the pleasure to have walked in on powder, bum cream, wee, pen, cat bikkies, cat litter, fish food pellets, shredded paper, and everything else in between. I can understand how much fun it would be, to not have a… Continue

Winning with sleep overs.

When Jack and Ollie were each about four months old, we started getting them used to sleepovers at their grandparent’s house. I knew that I wanted to get them used to sleeping wherever we needed them to go – so started them early to get used to it. AND IT’S BEEN BRILLIANT! Not only do they look forward to going to our parents, but they don’t make a fuss when we walk out the door.

About once a fortnight or 3 weeks, they’ll spend the night away to give hubby and I time to relax, and… Continue

Who do the look like?

For my entire life, I have had so many people comment on how much I look like my mother, yet neither of us have been able to see it. The same thing is happening to my boys. 'Oh, he looks just like you.' Or 'He has his daddy's eyes.' Etc, etc... And I'm still totally blind to it!

What I can see in Ollie, is that he has white blond hair like my brother did, and brown eyes like his uncle. Jack has blue-green eyes like no one I know, and is left handed like a couple of uncles too. Before… Continue

Cats' Mishaps Bring Cheer to a Heavy Heart, Dealing with loss, and a Big Surprise!

It's been a rough couple of weeks and I haven't been able to write about it until now, but we lost a very close family member recently. It was the day after she passed away and I couldn't stop tears from falling, though I was trying to function enough to make lunch for the kids.

As I stood against the kitchen counter, trying to see through my red, blurry eyes,…

I Heart Levis

I really miss my Dad today and I'm thinking about his Valentine and how she didn't get a gift from him this morning. I am remembering getting cards and chocolates and bears from him myself as a little girl. It's just another difficult day.

But God always finds a…

Healthy Dad = Healthy Kids

In an article by Nicola Conville, 'Dads determine child obesity', on Body and Soul:

"A recent Australian study has found having an overweight father quadruples a child's chance of being overweight, even if they have a mother of normal weight."

The study looked…
