Here's yet another wacky list of things I've learned lately, and lord knows we all need a little something to laugh about. Included this time is the realization that turning 29 again wasn't so bad after…

Keeping Things in Perspective When Times are Tough
Article by Wendy McCance
One of my children has been going through an incredibly rough time recently. There has been some upsetting moments with friends. It is affecting their self-esteem and performance in school. Lets face it, it's hard to be a kid. When bad things occur, things can spiral out of control fast. Feelings get hurt more deeply. The learning curve is quite high because of a lack of experience. It's painful to watch your child suffering while trying to get…

Update on our Little Lady
Last week we made a trip to the dental clinic on post. Our Little Lady was going to get a mold done of her palate so that she could be fit for a prosthetic palatal obturator, also known as a palatal plate. This plate would be similar to a retainer without the wire that would cover the opening in her palate while she is eating. The plate would help guide food down her throat instead of getting pushed up into her nasal passage. Right now the problem we are having with her eating is that her…

My Daughter Is in Love with Herself. Really.
Any remote fears of my twelve year old daughter developing low self-esteem dissolved the second she showed me pictures of this school year’s first crush.
Opening her laptop, Mali prepares me for the shock. “Brian (my husband/her stepfather) said we could be twins.” She presents me with her desk top wallpaper: a collage of this dude we’ll call Amadeus. And yes, he shockingly resembles the girl that came from my womb.…

What my daughter has taught me Chapter 4
You neva knew nothin' about love!
My message and mantra has always been one of love. If you live your life and run your business from a place of love and abundance you can't really go wrong. I was running around, speaking and living my message never ever realizing I only had about a tenth of the whole picture.
In the past few months Lily has not only shown me the kind of love that allows you…

Bailey's Birthday Minus Mom
By Dana McIntyre @DanaMcIntyre1
It’s so hard for me to believe, but my husband and I have been married now for almost three years. We don’t have any kids together but we both brought kids from our previous marriages into our new one.
Most parents will agree that one of the most difficult things about getting divorced is not having your children with you all of the time. (Although for some people, they…

You suck!
“You suck!”
Are you aware that you tell your kids this all the time? I did once. I would tell them, “You’re fat, unattractive, unloveable. You are not good enough. I wish you looked like that prettier person over there.”
Shocked? I’ll bet that you do the same. Every day. And you don’t even know it.
Let me explain.
That child of yours looks at you like you’re a superhero, right? To her, you’re the most beautiful,…

Letter to My Teenage Daughter
Dear Daughter,
I know that it is hard to believe that one day you will be a teenager, but you will. That day scares me more than anything because it means that you are that much closer to leaving. But for now, while you are still little (well, sort of little), I think I need to write down some things that you need to know about being a teenager. I need to do this now before you turn into one and I lose my temper and my mind and forget the important points I wanted to make...…

Am I Enough? Mom-guilt halted.

As an ultra-busy working mom of two, I often wonder if I am giving enough of myself to my kids and if I am making a positive impact on them. Are they learning from me? Do they remember the moments when I am not yelling or barking orders? Am I fun? The mom-guilt can be overwhelming.
So, last weekend I decided that I was going to reserve my afternoon for “Peyton and Mommy’s Day of…

Raising a Biracial Daughter
Recently my students were reading Martin Luther King's famous speech, "I Have a Dream." As excited as I was to share such a momentous time with my ninth graders, I was also a little scared. What could I possibly do or say to make them understand? Lord knows I didn't when I was their age. But I wish I did. We sat together in the darkened classroom to watch King deliver his message, and as he spoke these words--"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation…
