Will Adding a Second Cochlear Implant Improve My Daughter’s Hearing?
After my daughter received her cochlear implant in 2001, she has continued to have ongoing speech and language delays. These delays are a direct result of my own personal decision to wait so long to have her surgery. Looking back, I would have done things differently and I wouldn’t have waited so long to give my…

Second Baby, Anyone?
"Okay, give me a personal trainer, personal assistant, housekeeper, and a couple nannies and I'll make some time to think about sex." -Anonymous
It's seems like almost every woman whom I was simultaneously pregnant with a few years ago is expecting, already had, or working on baby #2, and I just can't figure out one thing: when are they finding time to have sex?…

Belly Diaries: Week 20: Halfway There
Poor E. We found out this week that he's officially outnumbered 3 to 1. My premonition from March came true: this little kicking babe is a girl. He said he won't be worried unless the NEXT one is a girl, too. (HAHAHA, the next one. He must mean in about 10…

I had a dream last night that one of my children was seriously injured in a car accident. I woke up and realized that I had actually been crying in my sleep. I still feel a pain in my stomach when I relive the dream in my mind. I keep telling myself that it wasn’t real, that it was just my mind playing cruel tricks on me in my sleep. Yet, still, I hate that horrible feeling. Has that ever happened to you? When a dream seems so real that you have such a hard time believing it isn’t…

26 weeks pregnant - saying goodbye to the second trimester
Today, I am officially 26 weeks pregnant. Which means I have about a week left of the second trimester. Which means we’re almost to the third trimester. Which means…the baby is almost HERE.
I’m so excited and nervous and anxious at the same time that I can’t even stand it! Parts of me wish that he were coming next week and parts of me are happy that we still have a (short) 14 weeks left til my due date....Continue reading at …

Can I get a redo?
This is inspired by a recent Twitter conversation. With the twelve year age difference in my girls, I have obviously done things differently with Sophie than I did with Emma. Part of this is because I'm older and more confident, but much of the reason is because I just know more now. Resources were available to me the second time that were not there the first time. So, what would I do differently?
Lots of things.…

When my daughter was born, we were a stickler for the rules. We followed a sleep training book and never let her sleep in our bed. We only fed her in a highchair, we waited one week before introducing any new food, and we were so proud of ourselves when it all worked. She slept through the night at 3 months, she never fussed in her highchair, she ate vegetables and fruits and we felt like parents of the year. Then, baby #2 came. And since then, everything has gone to the…

new second trimester pregnancy symptoms made my weekend complete
I feel very pregnant today. Just thought I’d kick things off with that. I’ve been hearing all about this laundry list of second trimester pregnancy symptoms and I think about five of them hit me with full force over the last week or so. Seriously. And as a TMI WARNING, they’re not all the most flattering symptoms I could have imagined. But hey, at least I have some remedies if you’re suffering from the same thing!...Continue reading at …

Pregnancy hormones magnify your emotions
I’m going to preface this whole post by saying that pregnancy hormones can amplify your emotions in any situation. Even for the most cool of cucumbers, your emotions during pregnancy can pretty much make you a wreck in the midst of a stressful situation. I’m pretty good at talking myself out of being overly emotional – which has been a blessing over the past several months. And while I love being pregnant, I can genuinely say that this is a piece of pregnancy I will not miss after…

Ten Things That My Pregnant Self Decided Today
1. Pregnancy is an emotional sport. It's like every piece of your history comes to life and becomes a (very emotional) part of every decision you make. I'm not even an overly emotive person to begin with and sometimes I feel like a sixteen year old drama queen!
2. Frosted flakes are delicious, with or without milk.

Oh, the Places You'll Go!
Unlike many of my medical school counterparts, I don't do much going out (i.e. partying, bar hoping, etc.). Being a mother and a medical school student does not afford me much extra time for shenanigans and what not. So when I do get to go out and do something, even if it's mild and I'm home by 10 pm, that's a pretty good night for me.
Tonight was one of those nights. The American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) chapter at my school put on a mixer and a faculty couple was so…
