If there’s one thing I will never understand its kids and their relationship with food.

Why will they eat some types of food and not others?

Why will they eat some types of food one day and refuse it the next?

And why will they eat certain foods that have been cooked separately and placed side by side on a plate but not the same exact foods that have been mixed up and cooked all together in one casserole dish?

The burden of being the oldest child

The kids are back to school next week and it suddenly occurred to me, the other day as we were picking out new backpacks in Zellers, that this is the first time, ever, that I haven’t been worried about Amy’s transition into the new school year.

Amy has always been one of those kids that errs on the side of caution, so she’s always been pretty nervous about any major change in her routine. Add to that moving to a new country (between preschool 3 and 4 years), a new school…

A policeman for Halloween

Yes, we’re still in the middle of the summer holidays here in Vancouver. Yes, we should be thinking about going back to school, who our teacher will be next year, whether we’ll be in the same class as our friends from last year, whether mum will replace last year’s lunchboxes and backpacks with those really nice new ones we saw in Zellers the other day.

Uh-oh! Here comes mummy...

If there is one thing I’m strict about as a parent it is sleep.

Ever since Amy was born I have been adamant that my children will learn to settle themselves to sleep in their own bed where they will remain, fast asleep, until morning.

Remember the movie Groundhog Day, the one that Bill Murray starred in? The one where he plays a grumpy weatherman (Phil) who wakes up every morning to find that he is stuck in the same town (Punxsutawney), reporting the same news (will the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil see his own shadow?) on the same day (Groundhog Day)? Pin the sperm on the egg and other baby shower frivolities

Few social engagements in this world make me shudder quite like the prospect of a baby shower.

I’m just not a fan.

Same with bridal showers.
