What to Expect When Your Child May Be Getting Their Two Year Molars?

Today my youngest got to spend the day with me, he started running a low grade fever last night and acted like he didn’t feel very good.  I decided that is was best to keep him home from daycare so that he could get some extra rest while I monitored his fever.  It was nice being able to spend some one on one time with my baby.  We enjoyed the extra snuggles and cuddles, we watched a few of his favorite shows on TV, and spent some time …

Teaching Your Toddler How to Have Good Manners: Please and Thank You

Do you want your child to be polite in public?  Do you want them to say “please” and “thank you” when they are offered things?  If so, it is important that you begin teaching your child how to have appropriate manners early on.  In fact, the earlier you begin teaching your child the better off you will be in…

What is the ideal sibling age gap?

Yesterday I was watching my four-year-old playing so wonderfully with her 19-month-old sisters; they were interacting so well and enjoying each other’s company immensely (it isn’t always like that by the way). I thought how great it was that there was just a two-and-a-half year age gap between them.…

Parenting Moment: Listening to Spring

rose

My curly headed boy and I were bent over our roses when we first heard it. “Listen,” I whispered. Eli cupped his hand to his ears. With all of his might, he listened.

Slowly a grin spread across his face. He brushed back his curls, “‘Dose are ‘wittle biwrds. I heawrs ‘dem to muh eawrs.”

On our fence post hangs a bird house. It isn’t a special type or even very much to look at. But little…

What to expect when potty training a toddler.

Soon you will learn where every bathroom is in a 10 mile radius of your house.

Everytime you go to the grocery store your toddler will want to visit the bathroom.  Twice.  Because now she knows it exists.  To her, it is part of the errand now.

Think you’re done with that diaper bag?  Think again.  And get a bigger one, because instead of a handful of diapers and wipes, you’ll now need to pack 2 extra outfits complete with shoes (because the pee…

Dandelion Days

Dandelion days.

A sea of golden yellows dots the yard; they seem to have popped up over night. Having just learned, "April showers bring May flowers," my son repeats the phrase to himself as he explores each flower.

For that is what they are to him: flowers.

He hurries to bring me one, proud to be giving Mommy the flower.

And I treasure it.

As he races to collect more, I think about how fast this time will pass.

Soon the yellow flower heads will turn…

How to put a diaper on your toddler

Putting a diaper on an active toddler is like trying to catch a falling star — it is impossible. My daughter has a mind of her own and 1) hates diapers and 2) hates clothes. The success rate of clothing her and putting her diaper on in under 5 minutes is currently at 50%. DH is afraid to change her diaper because HB won’t sit still, and a diaper change ends in tears or leakage. Changing her is not for the faint of heart.

The following is an account of a “successful”…

13 Signs that Your Toddler Is Ready to Start Potty Training

A few weeks ago, I decided that it was time to let my son pick out a potty seat.  We choose to get a potty seat that easily fits on the regular toilet, so that I wouldn’t have to retrain him to use the big potty once he had potty training down.  Besides that the daycare he attends also uses a potty seat…

Another cleaning win!

Don’t ask me how I, out of all people, seemed to have produced two boys who love cleaning – the absolute opposite of me.

My boys have been fascinated with the vacuum cleaner since the first time they saw it. It was probably the noise, more than the functionality of it that made them want to try it the first time the other day. Am I complaining? Hell to the NO! Maybe they could see it suck up all the crap from the rug in our house, which made them want to give it a shot.

Tantrums at the shops

Could there be anything more embarrassing than having a fit-throwing, possessed-screaming little devil rolling around the floor at your local supermarket……… NO!

I’ve only been there once – Jack chucking a big hissy-fit in the middle of Saturday at Coles. Luckily for me, I confined him to the trolley seat with the attached seatbelt – but he still was very much the centre of attention that day. I could hear the thoughts of people death-staring me, or burning holes into the back of my… Continue

Toddlers and Technology

Earlier in the week I found myself reading and relating to this blog post over at The Young Mommy Life.  Big T works in IT and so is practically glued to his laptop, I am an undiagnosed Facebook addict.  I have an iPhone and face time my family almost every day.  We use the Xbox to webcam with my mother in law and to…

The truth hurts

Catching myself belting out an awesome tune from my iPad, thinking I should have auditioned for Idol (sarcasm intended), I peek into the rear view mirror to see Jack bopping his head, seemingly enjoying what he is hearing. I yell over the beat, ‘Mummy’s voice is pretty awesome isn’t it?’ Which enticed a very quick ‘No.’

Unluckily for him, I disagree, and will continue singing with blissful ignorance. Maybe I can even show his friends some day :p

Acceptable little white lies

Since Jack’s first Christmas, and seeing Santa at our local shopping centre, it was a no-brainer for us to carry on the traditional lie that Santa exists. So does the Easter bunny, and the tooth fairy. We even like the idea from the picture below. When the ice-cream truck bell is ringing, it means that they have run out of the good stuff.

We don’t think it’s a bad thing to tell little white lies to the kids. They’re much more entertaining than the truth. ‘Nah, there’s no magic in… Continue
