Bring back Captain Planet!

Growing up – I used to race home after school to catch my daily dose of cartoons before boring news was turned on by the folks. Channel 2 or ABC was the greatest! I got my fix with classics like Super Ted, Trapdoor, Captain Planet, that Friend of a Friend of mine show, just to name a few. Then, Saturday Disney was a winner in the morning.

Of course, my boys would probably love these shows – but they are no longer shown on free-to-air! Besides Sesame Street and Playschool – they get… Continue

Totally Random: This afternoon, I was reunited with a family I have not seen in ages! The Jetsons!!!

My gosh! So today there was absolutely nothing interesting on TV. I already watched the shows I DVR'd last night, so after watching them a second time this morning, it felt like overkill so I deleted them. My usual daytime shows that play while I'm on the computer were not as interesting as they usually are, so I was stuck channel surfing. I put the TV on the reggae and R&B music channels, but it's just the same old songs…

Tickets for Television: Regulating Tube Time.

This idea for regulating how much time your child spends in front of the television is borrowed from a very dear friend who has raised two smart, active, and involved kids- so I’m pretty sure it works. It’s a simple but very effective concept, here goes.

Get yourself a roll of those tickets that you see for rides at carnivals or amusement parks (you can find them online or at places like Party City.) Give your child an allotted amount of tickets to use per day with each ticket… Continue

Kitchen Think: Stop the Weight Bullying!

Are you a weight bigot?

Calling someone fat or obese, even under the pretext of being concerned for his or her health, is a form of bullying. Shaming someone in order to get them to lose weight is equally cruel.

And these days, those being bullied are just as likely to fight back…

Take the case of Wisconsin television anchor Jennifer Livingston. She received an email from a viewer…

Kids’ Shows You Can Watch With Your Kids Without Wanting To Gouge Your Eyes Out

Home with the kids? What’s on the idiot box? You may be pleasantly surprised and also completely disgusted depending on what you choose to tune into with your kids. Some kids shows should only be viewed by kids. Take the Fresh Beat Band for instance. (I recently heard a rumor that…

Taking the Pledge...TV will not rule the summer!

I cannot believe summer vacation is upon us.  I cannot believe my 3yr. old and 6yr. old are getting ready to spend 2 months of freedom and bliss…yelling at each other!  I am determined for two things to happen this summer: 1) I will not yell and 2) the TV will not be the boss.  I even had to take a deep breath just to type that statement!

I can appreciate my almost 2nd grader’s desire to decompress and get lost in the Disney channel.  I even find myself…

No- TV- Tuesday

I know for certain that I am not alone on this one.  I bet every parent out there is tired of all the buzz going on around the house.  The computer, the hand-held games, the TV, the electronic doodads that are just sucking our attention and turning us into mindless zombies.

I have noticed that the tv is on way too much at our house. .... Read more...

Sitcom vs. Reality

Am I the only person who is jealous of married couples in sitcoms?

Not in the sense that some may think, though I’d love to have a laugh track for my life! The thing I’m most jealous of are the arguments. It seems silly, right? Not!

I watch these couples on sitcoms get into fights and there is always a humorous undertone to them. Even if…

An Obsession and a Commitment

Weekends are usually bad for blogging. Give me a little me-time and I’ll squeeze it so full of projects, errands, and tasks that you’d think motherhood has taught me to somehow manipulate time itself. Like Santa Claus.

If you’re into numbers, my weekend math works something like this:

Time for mom + full-time with baby + domestic tasks (73) = Where did the time go?

If you’re not into numbers, that means I keep myself busy all…

Last Man Standing on ABC: A Review

I had a Couch Potato evening last night, a fairly infrequent indulgence. While I was waiting for Dancing With The Stars to come on (one of the few shows I actually follow – I know, I’m not proud of it), I decided to just go ahead and check out the sitcoms that preceded the DWTS Results Show. I’m really not a big fan of sitcoms, or as I like to call them, 22 minutes of mediocre (at best) one-liners. But, there I sat at 8 p.m. ET and on comes one of ABC’s new comedies, “Last Man Standing” with… Continue

Kids and Too Much Television? ...who cares!!

My Taylor hit the 2year mark in July, that's when we had all of her well baby checks.  Taylor has a bit of an addiction....don't judge!  She will only drink chocolate milk.  Well it happened that when I nursed her up until 11mo, I could make the smooth transition to regular milk because it wasn't quit her golden cow's milk.  I wasn't planning on going through with pulling out my booby NO LONGER...she grew teeth, and apparently she knew how to use them!

  Well there are…

A Little Tribute To Uncle Frank

Last night was a bit exciting for me, because of the arrival of my new Toshiba WiFi television.  Let me tell you, it's beautiful, thin and it resembles a picture in a frame.  Trying to sync a WiFi connection on a tv or a Wii, is not that easy, no matter what you say!  The directions that they send out nowadays are vague....well maybe too vague for someone like me who ALWAYS has a long and......

Reality TV Parenting - The One Week Challenge RESULTS

So how did you do?

One week ago, I challenged you, along with myself, to see if we could collectively stop the habit of using Reality TV Parenting as a way of spending time with our kids. Borne of my own guilt of using the latest episode of Survivor or anything on The Food Network as an opportunity to "bond" with my child, I thought I might see what it would be like to lose… Continue

Watching TV in a No-cable House

We don't have cable. TV, yes, but no cable.

The lesson that we are trying to convey to our children is that, at least for now, TV is a treat. Soon enough their lives will be inundated with TV, laptops, video games, cell phones, etc. But for now, the house is a quieter place. Countless studies have been done on the topic of children and TV and the results are never positive.

There are still shows that I watch, of course. The adage is true: you can find anything on the web.…
