I’ve always been a little skeptical of Martha Stewart, and her “It’s a good thing” philosophy of life. If it takes seven hours to make clear turkey gravy, I don’t consider it a good thing.
She always seems to be in control of everything and she can cook three meals a day, spend hours in her garden, work with her horses, bake wedding cakes, then host a weekend party for 30, without breaking a sweat.

Do you have a GPS navigator in your car? I don’t because I’m a woman and I always know where I’m going. And if I don’t, I ask…or use a map. This ancient method has never failed me yet.
However, as a man, my husband is often lost. He refuses to ask for directions and the only map he has in his truck is a map of Texas, which really doesn’t help him when he is driving through South Dakota. So, it is probably a good thing he has GPS navigator in both of his…

Our household has been a difficult place to be lately. Like most parents, I am struggling to keep boredom at bay, without sacrificing every moment of my day to my children.
But, the summertime boredom blues is not what is making this summer so hard. My daughter, Hunter, is in the process of turning our family inside out.

It’s a modern day West Texas Stonehenge.
In the middle of a farmer’s field, on the flat plains of the Texas Panhandle, stands ten Cadillacs, half buried in perfect alignment, like soldiers in a military parade.

I find balance in imbalance.
Maybe it’s because I live with such chaos is my life, or maybe it’s because I am just a little nutty and I have just adjusted over the years. But, this is more about my aesthetic sense and not my insanity.
I like to think of myself as an amateur interior decorator. I’ve spent years decorating my own houses, and a part of me always gets depressed when I complete a project because I can no longer be obsessed with paint chips and fabric…

My friend, Duchess Ocean Waves, from Off the Hard Road, wrote a blog post recently that has been giving me pause. She wrote in It’s in the Bag, her thoughts about seeing a homeless man as she drove to work one day. As he rested at the side of the road, he had a garbage bag beside him containing all of his worldly possessions. This bag made the Duchess start to…

Recently, Colby told me I had planted an “overambitious garden.” He may be right, although I am not complaining…yet. In my second year of vegetable gardening, the list of things I am learning continues to grow.
One thing I’ve learned this year is that one year might produce a bumper crop of zucchini and the next year might be a bust. This is a bust year for zucchini. If a bloom forms, it ends up falling off before a zucchini forms. But, last year was a lousy year for tomatoes,…

There are few kitchen appliance that I love more than my Food Saver, affectionately know as the Suck and Sealer (S&S). I love to cook and I make dinner for my family, on average, six days a week. So, kitchen toys are a necessity…and just plain fun.

“Two nights a week I cook. Two nights a week he cooks. Two nights we go out. And one night is sandwich night”
Do you remember this line from the movie, About Last Night? This particular conversation was about cooking. But last night, Colby and I had a similar conversation about sharing the responsibility of putting Hunter to bed.

I have a summer cold. It sucks.
I rarely get sick, but I guess my number came up and the Cold Fairy decided to whack me with her sick stick. Colds in the winter aren’t so bad, because you can curl up on the couch with hot tea and lemon and be miserable with yourself. But in the summer, not so much. The garden doesn’t care that my throat hurts, and the basil and kale certainly don’t give a shit that all I want to do is take a nap. Nope. And apparently, the children still expect…

I often wonder how we, as women, survive. I know that I am not unusual, but I spend the majority of my time worrying about what I have to do, longing to do the things I want to do, and guilting myself out when I don’t get things done, because I was doing what I wanted to do for myself.
Why do we do this to ourselves? Life is complicated enough without adding more and more layers of complexities. Somehow, society has painted a picture of what the perfect woman should be. She should…
