This morning, the Christmas tree lights are unplugged, and it’s just a dark form in the corner of the room. If I touch the needles of the tree, they shatter in my hand. Where presents used to spill out on the floor in abundance, just a carpet of dried needles can be found.

My birthday was last week and my gift from Colby was a Kindle. I sat on the fence for a long time about whether I wanted one or not. I am a book person. I love to lie in bed at night and hold a book in my lap until I fall asleep. I love cracking the spine of a new book and dog-earing the pages when I am finished reading. Sometimes I keep my place by hooking my reading…

Elliott gets her braces today. I can’t tell if she is excited or scared. The appointment was made in May when I took her to the orthodontist to see if she needed braces. Colby and I knew she needed braces because she has a receding chin and a wicked overbite, but we needed to respect the experts.

As a parent, I have been judged so many times I have lost count. It starts in the grocery story line or in an airplane. As the kids kick the back of your seat or scream through the entire flight, your anger and frustration is not necessarily focused on the child, but at the parents.
As a parent of a child with reactive attachment disorder (RAD), the parental judgment reaches higher levels. Now the judgment doesn’t come from strangers, but from friends and family. “Why can’t…

Today is my birthday. I have reached the ripe (but not spoiling) middle age of 47. I am proud to be 47 today. I am in a good place in my life. I have two wonderful, yet challenging children. I think the challenging aspects of parenthood keep me young. I have a husband that adores me, and the feeling is mutual. I have great friends and family…and I don’t look 47. I think that is the best part of all!

Have you ever wondered what the perfect job would be? Just letting your mind wander to the possibilities without restrictions, obligations, or geography? A few years ago, I would have loved to have been a legislative aid on Capitol Hill. However, with all of the political bullshit that never seems to change despite what flavor of the month is in power, being a congressional aid just doesn’t sound that much fun any more.

Weekday mornings in December are difficult. There is a lot going on with the holidays; band concerts, choral concerts, basketball practice, days full of shopping. All of this…

On Black Friday, rather than braving the crowds in the mall, I watched a What Not To Wear marathon. From 9:00a to 9:00p, the women of the
my house watched back-to-back-to-back episodes of Stacy London and Clinton
Kelly ripping apart the lack of fashion, setting closet rules and making 12
women look beautiful. We had to
wrestle the TV remote out of the hand of my father, and chase the males of the
house upstairs…

I know some of my faithful and loyal readers may have already read this particular post. Probably because I posted it a few months ago. However, rather than writing a new blog post, I am on a plane to Texas where I get to visit my "Pink Cattle Company." I assure all of you that I…
