Be A Blogger Other People Follow

I have long pondered the reasons some bloggers are successful and why others are not. I have found a lot of common ground among my favorite bloggers. Here is what I have found.

1. Always be yourself.
In the online community, you should be the same person you are in the offline community. It's who you are, it's real.

2. Allow yourself to be unique.

There is no one else exactly like you. Tell us about the uniqueness of yourself and your life.

3. Always be honest.

Give your honest opinions and research your topics. You'll find it much easier to handle opposite views if you are standing on your own familiar ground.

4. Be interesting.

It's okay to have an opinion! Don't be afraid of readers/comments that disagree. If we were all alike, all blogs would be boring!

5. Be approachable.

I learned this more from my college roommate than anyone else. She was always approachable no matter what situation she was in. She was pleasant and treated you courteously, which encouraged others to be the same way with her.

The same goes for your "online life". Be courteous even when you don't agree. Participate in conversations on other blogs. Encourage your readers to participate.

6. Respond as often as possible.

Don't ignore your readers. Answer their questions, opinions, etc...

7. Network.

I'm not a fan of the word "network". To me it implies a business transaction that is cold. However, you should meet and build friendships with other bloggers.
