Do you remember when you watched the circus and it was time for the balancing act of the plates. I always got really nervous for the performer hoping they don’t drop any plates.
Balancing multiply plates on a stick is not an easy task. If you remember, there is a process to making the balancing act work. They start by spinning one plate on the top of a single stick. When the first plate is balanced they move on to the next and so on. The overall goal is to balance as many plates as possible, simultaneously. It doesn’t stop there; once all the plates are balanced and spinning, they have to see if the speed of any of the plates are slowing down and if so, give it a another spin to maintain the balance. The performer cannot focus on just one plate at time, they have to give their attention to all of the plates in order for the balance act to be successful.
A similar balancing act is what we all work at achieving in our daily lives. Every plate represents different areas of importance in our lives that we want to have in order.
There have been debates on, can we truly create a balanced life? I believe the word “balance” is what makes some of us think that it’s impossible, so I want to define the word a little different for you. I don’t want you to get stuck on the word and loose sight of the benefit you will experience once you create balance in your life.
Balance: To bring into or keep in equal or satisfying proportion or harmony.
Now when thinking of balance look at this way: A pleasing interaction and proper arrangement of all areas of your life.
To be honest, every area in your life will not always run smoothly at the same time all the time, however that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t work at creating a harmonious life that is suitable to you.
First: Determine what areas in your life are important to you.
Second: Document the current status of those areas and be honest with yourself.
Third: Ask yourself, if these areas were to be balanced, how would they look to me?
Third: Decide on what actions you need to take to take in order to have those areas function the way you imagined.
Taking these steps are like taking inventory on your life. You will have an overview of your life and be able to see where things are out of order. Once you clearly see the imbalance, you can focus your attention on balancing that part of your life.
Of course journaling this process is a great tool, to keep you on track, with creating a balanced life. You first have to make a conscious effort to actually take these steps regularly.
I want to introduce to you the Self-Check Journal. This journal has 5 key areas in life that you can work on if you’re unsure about where to start. Balancing your life is always a great way to create continual self-awareness.
It is very important to note that you’re not striving for perfection, but balance according to how things work for you.
