Our 2nd week back to school was pretty full for a 3-day week. We got a lot accomplished with very little stress involved. One or two more partial weeks of school are left before we start back up full-time. It's still too early to know for sure if all of our curriculum is working yet. Sometimes things start out with a bang and then fizzle out.
Art was fun. We studied Vincent Van Gogh this week by looking at many of his paintings and listening to letters he wrote to his brother. Both children liked Van Gogh's paintings and were surprised to learn that he only sold one in his lifetime. They told me if they looked at some of the paintings long enough, they could see them "move." They practiced some Van Gogh inspired drawing techniques on their guided worksheets by adding texture to their drawing, building texture around shapes, and making concentric circles and spirals. On their final worksheet they brought several of these texture techniques together in a mock-drawing of Starry Night. Next week they will take the skills they learned and make their own Starry Night pictures.
