Being a parent of a special needs child has a unique looking schedule. The hustle and bustle of the day can look much like the average Joe’s day if you only look on the surface; but check our calendars or stand back and really watch our day. Underneath you will find a wave of activity, a snowstorm of appointments and an exhaustingly long to do list. So in all this craziness of the day in the life, is there time for you?

This is a question that is in the forefront of my mind. I am always so busy trying to make sure medication is taken, appointments are made, we get there on time, and schedules are kept, that I often forget to pencil myself in. The end result of that is one exhausted Mama who looks feels and seems completely drawn thin and frazzled. I often go to long without rest, to long without spiritual refueling and to long without taking care of me. I eat on the go, go to bed late, get out of bed early, run my child to school  in yesterdays clothes (cause the laundry still needs done) tackle a disheveled house, scrap up something for lunch and dinner, run back to get my child from school, put dinner on the table, homework time, playtime, bedtime routine…and yes back to bed only to watch the minutes tick by. This is only a glimpse of a regular day, add doctor appointments, pharmacy runs, phone calls to specialists and Lord only knows what else and you get one tired cranky mama!

Why is it that I don’t stop and take care of me, you might ask? Well in my mind everything and everyone comes first. Plus where do I find the time to stop and just be still. The one major problem with this is I am taking it all on by myself. I am trying to learn to stop and take care of me. I need to learn to fill myself up, so I have something to give. I also need to learn that if I do not seek Him (God) first, I will have a difficult time surrendering the things of my day to Him. This state of mind only allows the madness to continue.
