The security door to the parking structure shut behind me with a loud thud. My body immediately tensed against the rush of cold air and the eeriness of the empty sidewalk. I pulled my scarf up over my mouth and clutched my purse tightly under my arm as I scurried as fast as my legs would allow.
Because at 7am in the winter, it is still dark out...
...and in Detroit, you don't just go walking in the dark.
The only noises I heard outside were from my shoes hitting the sidewalk forcefully and quickly. My breathing labored as I reached the halfway point to the hospital. In fact, I remember thinking of how out of shape I was. I decided that once my pain got under control, I would start back on the eliptical. That's when I heard her yell at me.
I stopped in my tracks, spilling coffee on the maple leaf emblem on Canadian Olympic mittens. For a split second, I was foolishly more worried about the stain then the woman quickly approaching me.
"Hey! In the name of Lord Jesus. I'm not going to mug you. I'm not going to mug you or attack you, but give me your money. Give. Me. Your. Money."
