A Mom Blog Social Network
I discovered BabyProFinder.com through Twitter and recently added my name to the directory. Through this website, parents and soon-to-be parents can find professionals by location, specialty, or insurance accepted. What a great resource to have! BabyProFinder won me over when I saw they featured lactation support advice from Renee Beebe on their blog. I met Renee Beebe a couple of years ago, and she is the lactation consultant I refer my own patients to should they find themselves in need of support.
Speaking of lactation support, you may be surprised to find that acupuncture treats lactation insufficiency. There is even a special pressure point, SI 1 (see diagram on right),
for treating insufficient lactation. This point is usually combined with other pressure points on the body to either nourish a deficiency or move stagnation. Deficiency and stagnation are the two reasons in Chinese Medicine why low milk supply may occur. Deficiency happens when there is a loss of Qi and/or fluids, and a lack of fluids can manifest as little or no milk. Stagnation is often a result of engorgement or inflammation but can also arise due to anxiety. Nourishing Mom after the birth of her child, or moving any Qi and blood stagnation, will keep milk supply flowing.
