Feeling better is so much more than a physical thing. It is also a mental battle with yourself. Whether you want to be able to run around with your kids or do a specific physical activity, you will first have to deal with your mental state before you can move on to the physical. Making the decision to make changes in your life is the first step, but staying dedicated to it may be the hardest. Here are six ways for you to overcome the mental part of the journey and be able to feel better for yourself and for your family.
Set Small, Obtainable Goals
Most people jump into their program and use the big goal as their barometer for whether they are successful or not. While you may have the big goal in mind, breaking it down into smaller goals can be much more mentally rewarding, because you will meet them quicker. Breaking down any job into small and manageable bits can be the way that you can achieve your big goal.
Find Ways to Reward Yourself
Of course, you do not want to use food as a reward, but you do want to find rewards that will keep you on track and moving towards your goal. Whether it is a massage, a pedicure, or something else to treat yourself, having these rewards associated with meeting goals can instill a bit of competition within yourself. This can be a key to helping you to remain on task and be able to meet your smaller goals and your larger one.
Enlist the Help of a Friend
Friends are helpful for any task, but most especially for getting more active. Most everyone has this as a goal and when you are able to find a like-minded friend to jump on board with you, you can take some of the stress out of it. In addition, you can encourage each other to stay on track and keep your “dates” for working out and doing other activities.
Music Can Encourage
When you listen to music, it can help you to stay on pace and it can also encourage you. In many ways, it distracts the mind from what you are doing and allows you to exercise longer without even realizing it. Find your favorite music and create a playlist to enjoy while you are doing your favorite activities. Whether you like 70’s disco music, 80’s headbanging music, or another type of music, listening to music can help you to mentally remove yourself from the exercise to allow you to work harder and do it more consistently.
Mixing It Up
By doing different activities each day, you decrease the chance that you will get bored and simply quit exercising. Whether you ride Schwinn elliptical machines one day and go rock climbing the next, you want to find activities that not only use a wide variety of muscles, but also make it more fun. This is how I keep myself on track, simply because it keeps me from becoming bored.
Making It a Priority
How much of a priority do you put into your activity or exercise plan? By scheduling it into your day, you can make it more of a priority. This is especially true for those people who live on a schedule. If you make it a priority, you will increase the chance that you will actually do it on a consistent basis.
If you are tired and have no energy, you are most likely looking for ways that you can feel better. By overcoming your mental battles with getting regular activity, you will be able to become more consistent and dedicated to taking care of your body. This can have long-lasting effects that can be seen in many different ways, from living longer to having more energy to simply feeling physically better. By using the above tips, you can get yourself in the right mindset to get more active and feel better. For as Anne Wilson Schaef says, “Looking after my health today gives me a better hope for tomorrow.” We all need that hope.
