Baby’s Bowel Movements:

Every parent remembers those first dirty diapers that were filled with dark colored, tarry, sticky stools that are difficult to clean off the baby. Then after breastfeeding my baby, her stools turned a greenish orange which developed into the classic mustard yellow poop that is common for breastfed babies. I really didn’t mind these dirty diapers, although my husband would use every excuse he could think of to get out of changing the baby.

It wasn’t actually that bad though, those bowel movements smelled somewhat like popcorn and wiped off easily. If you are wondering about formula-fed babies, the normal poop for them is usually a greenish color and a little more formed than their breastfed counterparts. (This is another proof to me that formula is still much more inferior to breastmilk as it does not produce the same end result after digestion.)

Now that solid foods have been established in my baby’s diet, her bowel movements have changed in many ways. It’s silly sounding but I miss my baby’s exclusively breastfed dirty diapers. The not-so-bad popcorn smelling poohs have a horrible odor now.

Also, I can see what I have been feeding her- they have turned orange from all of the sweet potatoes and carrots she has eaten. Note to self- don’t be surprised if you see a rainbow of colors in your baby’s diaper if you are feeding them rainbow colored foods. I don’t want to gross anyone out so I’m not going to post any pictures of baby poop but I found a very informative article about baby’s bowel movements that includes photos.

So, if you want a more in-depth description of baby poop or pictures I suggest reading the Baby Poop Guide at babycenter.com. For now, my experience with baby poop is limited to breastfeeding bowel movements and very stinky solid food beginner’s poop... To read more visit My Baby Experience
