Monday’s are tough.

Rainy Monday’s are a little tougher.

Rainy Monday’s after a week-long absence are just totally unpleasant.

Greeting me at work this morning with the rain clouds were 574 emails. After two hours of work, I have 420 remaining and a splitting headache. It is difficult for me to adjust when my routines are disturbed and even more difficult to resume my routines when they have been interrupted. Yesterday, my first normal day since May 9th, I avoided the technological piles that I knew had been waiting for my attention. Instead, Sunday afternoon was more appropriately spent acting like a family. It is amazing how much blowing bubbles outside, shopping for groceries, and redecorating the kitchen can have a positive effect on someone so eager to not be lost somewhere between coming and going.

I have a  new found appreciation for not complaining about being a working mom. Although it is certainly difficult balancing work and family, it’s even more difficult when you have to balance other factors as well. I’m not sure I made the right choice by ignoring other factors last week, but certainly I was able to get through the unexpected by focusing on what was most important. Routines are important for children, but do we ever outgrow the necessity to have them?
