One of our favorite local restaurants in Gatlinburg is the Alamo Steakhouse. We will talk about it for months before our trip. We place it at the top of our Gatlinburg To-Do List. In fact, this year we ate at The Alamo before we even checked into our hotel!  It was the destination we headed to as we left home.

Nestled by a creek where ducks swim and visitors are invited to relax in the shade while enjoying the beauty of the area – the Alamo Steakhouse is a nice place to take in a relaxing meal after a day of travel or hiking through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Alamo Steakhouse is known for it’s outstanding steaks, and that’s one of the items we enjoy most.  It’s clear why they were voted to have the best steaks in the county!  Actually, they’ve been voted that quite often!

Best Steaks:  2002, 2003, 2006 ,2007, 2008 & 2011
Best Overall Restaurant:  2002, 2006, 2009 & 2011

We highly recommends trying The Steak when you visit. Yes, it’s called The Steak.

Alamo steakhouse in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge Tennessee – The greatest restaurant in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Serving appetizers, soups, sandwiches, Black Angus steaks, chicken, chops, seafood and more with a special Children’s Menu all in The Great Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge Tennessee.

The Alamo Steakhouse Restaurant in the Smokies is the perfect dinner setting, for anything from an intimate dinner for two to a big family dinner, including private seating to accommodate reunions, wedding parties, anniversary celebrations and more. Our restaurant booths are tucked away to assure privacy, and our dining areas provide ample room for all to enjoy. The atmosphere is perfect for all ages and our large dining room is suitable for groups up to 50.

Alamo Steakhouse also provides a menu designed for children – I taste tested the meals our kids tried, very yummy!

The kids enjoyed the Wikki Stix that they are given to create with and enjoy while they waited on their meals.  They look forward to these and plan ahead all of the designs that they will build.

Alamo Steakhouse also has a location in Pigeon Forge though we’ll probably stick to the Gatlinburg location – simply out of tradition.

Take a Pic in the Big Blue Chair!

The Big Blue Chair

The Big Blue Chair has been around Lynchburg since 2014. Created by Kevin Sanders and Tim Yannayon, this bright blue chair has become a fun way for people to remember their stop here. To avoid a controversy between TN and AL fans, rather than painting it orange or crimson, the chair was painted blue – in honor of our very own Moore County Raiders. Pictures submitted to our local Chamber of Commerce are shared on their Facebook page. People from all around the world are featured sitting in the Big Blue Chair! This picture of my boys was taken in 2015 – we are definitely due for a new one!

Lynchburg Old Jail Museum

Lynchburg Old Jail Museum

The Lynchburg Old Jail Museum holds a special place in our family’s heart and history. My father-in-law served for a short time with our local law enforcement. During his time, he worked from this “old” location. Every few years, our family enjoys a tour (free — but they gladly accept donations!) to look at the artifacts held inside. My husband can tell his own stories about spending time in there with his dad and he can easily name most of the people you’ll see photos of on the walls. It was built in 1893 and remained in use until 1990. Be sure to add it to your list to visit!

Barrelhouse BBQ

Barrelhouse BBQ

If your belly starts rumbling and begging for food during your visit, a stop at Barrelhouse BBQ is a must! Home to the Grilled Cheese on Crack, if you go away hungry, it’s your own fault! Chuck’s BBQ was featured on BBQ Pitmasters and once you get a taste, you’ll see why – it’s delicious! Our family enjoys a stop at the restaurant before Friday night football games. Each year since opening, Barrelhouse BBQ has received TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence. Learn more on their website

Lynchburg Cake & Candy Company

If you love sweets, The Lynchburg Cake and Candy Co. will be a special treat! Mr. Bill Thomas and his wife took a 135+ year old family recipe and modified it to include a local taste of Jack Daniels Whiskey. Today, they offer several products include Jack Daniels such as pralines, whiskey balls, and more. Free tours are offered daily. Visit their website for more information or to place an order!

Lynchburg City Cemetery

Lynchburg City Cemetary

This is another place within Lynchburg that holds a lot of memories for my husband. He helped his father, mother, and sisters mow in between the graves in this local cemetery. On the grounds, you’ll find Jack Daniel’s grave, along with a couple of chairs. While this isn’t necessarily a “tourist” stop, if you’re interested in history, you’ll get a feel for our community here. Please be respectful to the grounds if you choose to visit.

Lynchburg Hardware & General Store

Lynchburg Hardware & General Store

If you’re in need of a memento from your visit to Lynchburg, a stop at the Lynchburg Hardware & General Store is a must. They carry authentic Jack Daniel’s Whiskey gear including drinkware, apparel, coffee, treats, and more. It’s a gorgeous shop that makes you feel like you’re transported in time when you get soaked into the decor.

Southern Perks Cafe & Bistro

Southern Perks

Southern Perks Cafe & Bistro is a tasty stop right on the square in downtown Lynchburg. When I worked in town, our office would frequently order lunch and desserts for special events. Their own special selection of menu items is completely different from anything else you’ll find in town. The fresh selection of pastries and a piping hot cup of coffee are the perfect start to any visit in Lynchburg!

All opinions are our own.

What’s the first thing you look for when planning a beach getaway and search for the perfect beach-front resort? A bunk bed, right! You’d be surprised at the number of kids who want just that.

The things that I look forward to the most are moments I get to spend with my kids – away from home. Traveling with the family are special events for me – and I know I won’t always get to do this with them.

So, when planning a beach vacation for my family – I seek out hotels, resorts, and condos where they can enjoy themselves. Location is a big factor in planning. We want to be close to places and attractions that we want to visit. And we love us some beach. No better place to vacation than a place where I can, for the most part, relax. Am I right?

On our recent trip to Destin, Florida – we spent part of the time at SunDestin Beach Resort by ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacation Rentals. It has such a great location! After first and foremost being located on the beach – it is close to so many restaurants and attractions. In fact, as I checked in – someone was right there to introduce me to the area and handed me a detailed list of places I may want to try while in the area. We’ve been to Destin twice before – but wasn’t aware of so many neat places to explore.

We loved the easy access to the beach and as I said previously – the location was excellent and close to almost everything. With a private beach on Florida’s Emerald Coast and spacious condos, SunDestin was a great find for our trip. Check it out!

You hear it from me often – I love to prepare food and cook. I especially love getting to do this on vacations. Yes, I really do – even though I very much love finding new places to dine and local fare to try while traveling.

Look at all the space I have here to prepare and store food. It’s one thing to have the necessary equipment to make meals – it’s quite another to have adequate space to prepare it and store all the ingredients. This kitchen gave me plenty of space for both! And I had a gorgeous beach view while doing it. I’m not sure that you can beat that.

This condo came with one bedroom, a set of bunk beds located in the hall, a full bathroom and a guest bathroom. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited my children were about bunk beds. I would have loved them as well – especially their cozy locations and cute setup.

And, they are cute – aren’t they!

I liked having a private room – separate from the kid’s lodging yet still very close to them. The bedroom was the perfect size for my husband and myself. It also allowed me a little bit of alone time while I was getting ready for the day, beach trip, or to check out the local sites. It can be a little difficult to get that personal time when traveling with the entire family, am I right?

Gulf View

The beach view from the balcony was simply breathtaking and very relaxing. And in the same breath, it was invigorating! Does the earth’s natural beauty do that to anyone else – relax yet inspire you?

It became my morning ritual to wake up, brew a cup of coffee – and watch the sun rise over that beautiful Emerald Coast. We also spent most of the evenings watching the sun set from the balcony. That’s one of our favorite traditions when we vacation along the beach. How can you not enjoy viewing such a site?

We were also able to see a wedding from the balcony! I LOVE when that happens! So, thinking of an extended family vacation AND beach wedding – SunDestin has services to help you plan that and make it happen.

If we didn’t pack and take our lunch down to the beach – we enjoyed it from the balcony. Because it’s just hard to say goodbye to the gulf even when you need to go inside to eat! Slipping back onto the balcony and enjoying a chicken-wrap while we rested and prepared for more fun on the beach holds many great memories.

I had been so tempted to spend at least one night on the couch – so that perhaps I could have a better chance of hearing the waves as I drifted to sleep. But, I typically did not do that. But just enjoyed the view from the couch when I needed to sit with my laptop and get a bit of work done. Hey, I’ll take that view any day! (I’m writing this while sitting in front of an empty, white wall – nowhere near the gulf.)

If you’ve never been to Destin, you must go! It is quite a treasure along Florida’s Emerald Coast – offering everything that all types of travelers can enjoy. It boasts award-winning beaches, as well as one of the top U.S. tennis resorts. It also has the reputation as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.” I haven’t yet done any fishing while we’ve been there, but I’ll need to plan to go back and give it a try!

We loved both places we stayed on this trip. Both were by ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacation Rentals which offers the largest selection of Destin Florida vacation rentals. You’ll have to check them our here. They have everything from condos to private homes, and resorts.
