How to Declutter Your Home and Save Money

Picture this: You open your closet door, and an avalanche of clothes tumble down at your feet.

That’s when you realize that you have more clothes than you know what to do with. You look around your room, and your shelves and bedroom tell the same story of clutter. So, you make the hard decision to finally clean your home, hoping to recover some of that lost closet space and more.

But how can you go about it? Here are a few tips for decluttering your home and how you can save money in the process:

Arrange Items According to How Often they are Used

The first thing you should do is to gather your belongings and decide how often you need to use them. This can help you determine if you need the item in question, and where you should store it when it is not in use.

Take for example your hairbrush. You use it every day to fix your hair before going out. So, it only makes sense to have it somewhere that you can quickly get and use it. Meanwhile, other items like your cleaning materials are used once a week. So, it should be stored away in a cupboard.

Knowing where everything should be placed is essential, as it can save you time from having to look for an item when you need it, and money, because you don’t have to keep buying a new comb every time.

Set a Limit

When you let your things accumulate over time, they tend to take over your home. So, it is essential to establish limits for yourself. Doing this will help prevent you collecting a significant number of items over time.

For example, use your closet space and place only things that you will use in there. Make it a point to purge it at least once a year. During the purge, take out clothes you have hardly or have not worn within the last year. Take it out of the closet and put it in a separate box. You can then decide to either donate your old clothes or sell some of the nicer ones for profit.

Don’t Buy Storage

People who are looking to declutter their home often find themselves buying storage bins from the hardware store. In their minds, they think that these bins will help them with organizing their belongings, but in reality, these storage bins will contribute to the clutter.

That’s because these bins will offer a space to store their items. So, that they are still in your home, but they are out of sight. After that, you will be left with storage bins filled with items you’re not entirely sure what’s inside.

To counter this, only buy storage bins after you’ve decluttered your home. This way, it can serve its purpose of storing away any seldom used items properly.

See Your Home How a Guest Would

Imagine yourself as a guest in your home and look around. Is there anything there that might suggest clutter? Take note of the things you think a guest would notice. It could be that untidy pile of bills on the table or those blankets strewn on your couch.

Put away any of the unnecessary items and make sure that everything is neat and tidy. Ensure that your home is a place where your guests can feel comfortable.

Once you’ve successfully purged your home of any unwanted clutter, choose how you want to get rid of the extra items. You can do it in one of two ways, either you donate them to charity or to a family who needs it, or you can sell them either through a garage sale or online.

You can then take the earnings and set it aside for your next big purchase like a vacation, a used car finance deal to replace your old one or set it aside for a rainy day. Get started and reclaim your home from your things and earn some money in the process.
