7 Signs Your Home is Too Small

Generally speaking, the larger a home is, the more expensive it will be. This applies to buying as well as renting a property, so if you are short of cash, it is highly likely you won’t be able to afford a spacious residence.
Celebrities don’t have this problem. They are so wealthy that they can afford to buy enormous homes, the size of which you and I can’t even begin to comprehend. Whereas you might not have a spare room for guests, the average celebrity has at least ten, plus a further ten bathrooms. And it may not even be their main residence!

A Lack of Space

Compact living arrangements don’t matter when you are young and in love. Since you spend most of your time snuggled in each other’s arms, who needs a spare room anyway?

Then kids come along and the situation changes almost overnight. Kids accumulate a lot of clothes, toys, and other miscellaneous bits and pieces, and once you add a few pets into the mix, it won’t be long before your family home is bursting at the seams.

Upgrade to a Larger Property

So, how can you tell when it’s time to upgrade to a larger home?

  1. You have a row with your other half and the only place to sleep is the dog’s bed.
  2. When guests come over, it’s standing room only.
  3. The kids are sleeping four to a room.
  4. The kids beg to go on sleepovers every weekend so they don’t have to share a bed with their siblings.
  5. You would like another baby, but there is no room for a cot.
  6. The cat has moved in with your neighbor so it can have its own space.
  7. You had to sell the sofa because there was nowhere to put it.

When the lack of space is a serious issue, it is always worth thinking about extending your current property. You may be able to add another room in the attic, or build an extension at the rear of the property. Converting a garage is another option.

Extending an existing property is often cheaper than moving to a larger home, but if you don’t have the space, or your current home doesn’t fit the bill for other reasons, you should definitely look at buying a bigger property to accommodate your kids, pets, hobbies – or all three.

Maximize Space Better

Sometimes moving home is not on the cards because of the extra expense involved. In this instance, your best option is to maximize what little space you do have. To begin with, declutter your home and throw out anything you don’t need. Next, create better storage solutions so toys and other belongings are stored out of sight instead of being in your face.
