Leading causes of vision loss in women

Eyes may be windows to the soul, but they are also the windows to the world around us, helping us explore, travel, and make connections with loved ones and friends.

There is no doubt that eye care is important, even more so for women. The 2014 National Health Interview Survey found that women are 40 percent more likely to suffer from vision loss than men. The survey discovered that 22.5 million adult Americans aged 18 or over reported experiences of vision loss. Of these, 13.5 million were women and 9.5 million were men.

According to Women’s Eye Health nearly two-thirds of blindness and visual impairment around the world occurs in women. More than three-quarters of visual impairment can be prevented or is treatable.

 Types of diseases

There are numerous problems that women are more susceptible to than men. The leading causes of blindness include cataracts, uncorrected refractive errors, and macular degeneration. There are also a number of common eye diseases that are more prevalent in women than in men, such as dry eye disease, which is more common after the menopause, and autoimmune diseases such as lupus.

 Why do women suffer more?

On average, women live longer than men, which is why they often experience more eye diseases linked to the ageing process. As well as age, fluctuating hormones can have an impact on general eye health. Pregnancy can cause dry eyes, puffy eyelids, and refractive changes that may present as double or blurred vision.

Diabetic Retinopathy can be a trigger for vision problems in women also, damaging the eye’s light-sensitive retina as the blood vessels nourishing it are weakened.

Women lead busy lives, often balancing the demands of a job and childcare. Eyesight can be one thing that is neglected with problems remaining unaddressed due to a lack of time to attend checkups.


 Healthy Diet: Eat a diet rich in fruit and vegetables. Foods that contain antioxidants and vitamin C such as leafy greens, strawberries, and oranges help your eyes benefit from good nutrition.

 Don’t Smoke: Smoking causes irreparable damage to the body and can cause heart disease, strokes, and lung cancer. It can also cause blindness, so talk to your doctor about kicking the habit.

 Cosmetics:  Wash your hands when applying cosmetics and inserting contact lenses. Keep brushes and applicators clean and throw out mascaras, eye liners, and eye shadows that are older than three months.
