According to the stats, there are on average 40 million hospitalizations a year in this country, which if you break it down to an even scarier number is, 100,000 American citizens being hospitalized every single day. Against those odds, what chance do you stand? It seems you will be hospitalized at some time in your life and even though we have to pay for our healthcare (damn you forward thinking European countries) we actually have some of the best healthcare in the world, and as with anything, there is a ranking to reflect the best hospital institutions in the country. Here are the top ten best hospitals in the US. Hospitals gain rankings by having highly qualified staff members; doctors with super advanced doctorates and nursing staff with advanced qualifications like RN to MSN programs from institutions like University of Arizona’s College of Nursing. The primary factor, however, is their specialties, which I will detail below.
9 – Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University, St. Louis
Barnes is 9th on our list because the number 3 slot is shared. With 1,370 doctors the hospital sees 57,461 admissions and is the 14th best cancer hospital in the country and 8th best for Pulmonology.
8 – Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian, Philadelphia
Aside from being the biggest mouthful in the history of hospital names, number 8 on our list is the best hospital in Philadelphia. This general hospital is home to over 2,300 doctors and takes in around 38,000 admissions a year and over 64,000 emergency visits. It is the 11th best cancer hospital and the 4th best ear, nose, and throat specialist.
7 – UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco
The 7th best in America and the 2nd best on the West Coast, UCSF has around the same amount of doctors as the HUPPP (I couldn’t be bothered to write out the name of number 8 again). The hospital has just under 29,000 admissions a year and is 9th best for cancer and 4th best for both Nephrology and Neurology/Neurosurgery.
6 – New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, NY
Clearly the East Coast loves long hospital names that are a pain to type out. With well over 2,500 doctors this New York based hospital has over 100,000 admissions a year, which is astounding. What’s more incredible is 3 times that visits the emergency department a year. Whilst the hospital is only ranked 20th for cancer treatment, it’s 1st for Psychiatry and 3rd for both Cardiology/heart surgery and Nephrology.
5 – Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston
The first of two Boston hospitals, Brigham Women’s Hospital is has 3,600 doctors and sees 45,000 admissions a year. The hospital is 4th best for cancer in the US and, unsurprisingly, 2nd for Gynecology.
4 – Cleveland Clinic
A nice small one to type out, the Cleveland Clinic has around 2,700 doctors and sees nearly 55,000 admissions. The Clinic is 12th for cancer, but boast 1st, 2nd, or 3rd for Cardiology/heart surgery, Diabetes/Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Pulmonology, Rheumatology, and Urology. I’m assuming that people in Cleveland live a long time.
Joint 3 – UCLA Medical Center, LA
The best hospital on the West Coast, the UCLA Medical center has 3,150 doctors and deals with 23,500 admissions, which is quite small compared to the other big city hospitals on this list. UCLA is 6th best for cancer and 2nd best for Geriatrics (old people, to you and I).
Joint 3 – John Hopkin’s Hospital, Baltimore
With a small (comparatively) doctor staff of 1,886, this Baltimore hospital sees around 46,600 a year and is ranked 6th for cancer, but 1st for Rheumatology and 3rd for Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Neurology/Neurosurgery, and ear, nose, and throat.
2 – Mayo Clinic, Rochester
Quite possibly the most famous hospital in the world, due to its famous website, Mayo has 3,500 doctors and sees 62,400 admissions. It is the 3rd best cancer hospital in America and either 1st or 2nd for everything else, a part from Psychiatry (8th), Rehab (5th), and Rheumatology (4th).
1 – Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
And we finally get to the best hospital in America, Massachusetts General. Boasting nearly 5,000 doctors and 48,000 admissions, this hospital is 8th best for Cancer in the US and 1st for ear, nose, and throat, 2nd for Diabetes, Psychiatry, and Neurology/Neurosurgery.
